The Phantom Orange Shirt Guy
We all know Flash game extraordinaire Oliver a.k.a. Ollie a.k.a. The Phantom Orange Shirt Guy a.k.a. TPOSG. In this article, we'll cover who he is, why he seems to follow us wherever our gaming talents take us, and hopefully shed some light on a few other odd happenings in games around the site.
Who Is He?
Oliver was known by his co-workers at Neopets as "The Phantom Orange Shirt Guy." Unsurprisingly, he earned that name by consistently sporting an orange shirt to work. However, he eventually left Neopets to join Adam and Donna at Meteor Games in 2008. For more information, out our interview with the man himself!
How Do I Find Him?
Several games made by Oliver himself have secret nooks or rare events that allow him to be seen.
Attack of the Gummy Dice
Our favourite game programmer makes two appearances in this game! First, he is featured on a special cube with his head on it. When you drop it, it'll destroy all blocks within a two block radius. Second, when you're sending your score, click the Blue Blumaroo's eye and Ollie will pop up!
Attack of the Revenge
On the main screen, clicking on the Benny the Blade's right eye will reveal Oliver in yet another game! He is also a character during gameplay that you need to throw off the ship! Worth lots of points, of course.
Attack of The Slorgs
Click the Yurble's right eye. Oliver's head will appear on the right side of the screen. Move your mouse over the buttons to make his head jiggle. Hehe.
The Buzzer Game
Sometimes Oliver will appear as a distraction in the background during gameplay. Don't mess up now!
Coconut Shy
After you shoot a coconut, and the "You won xxx NP" box comes up, click the laughing Quiggle's right eye.
Dar-BLAT!!!
He will randomly appear on the Game Over screen and do a little dance beside the Darblat.
Defender Trainer
Clicking on Judge Hog's eye will result in an evil cackle from Oliver!
Destruct-O-Match III
On the main screen, click on the figure closest to the "Turn Visual Effect On/Off" button. Oliver appears in prehistoric clothes.
Dungeon Dash
On level 4 (Ice Cream Machine land), Oliver will occasionally appear as a scoop of ice cream flying towards you.
Faerie Bubbles
Click on the little dot of fire closest to the cannon (and near the "b") to have Oliver appear. He appears amongst some Faerie bubbles!
Faerie Caves II: Fyora's Quest
Click the gem on Fyora's crown to have Oliver appear. He'll be holding a torch near green dynamite. Seriously kids, don't play with fire. BOOM.
Frumball
Upon entering level 40, you'll see the Orange Shirt Guy himself. How do you get there? Type kougra to skip as many levels as you like. Or, you could play to level 40!
Gourmet Club Bowls
Click on the pearl in the clam type food on the table to hear Oliver's evil laugh!
Grand Theft Ummagine
On the title screen, click Setup, then click on the JubJub hieroglyph in the upper-right corner.
The Great Qasalan Caper
After you send your score and are redirected back to the main screen, click the hanging Meerca's left eye, and Oliver will slide into view! (Note: It only works after sending your score!) Ollie's head also appears during gameplay. If one of your statues touches his head, he'll explode, along with all of the Lyins in the level.
Hannah And The Ice Caves
During the level Muahaha! (the last level), he will randomly appear in the background. He doesn't do anything, though. Also note that the falling crates form the word OLLI. Now I wonder who came up with that idea?
Hasee Bounce
Oliver will sometimes fly across the screen like a normal Doughnutfruit; he's worth 42 points!
Ice Cream Machine
At the screen where it says what level you are now on (the beginning of each stage), leave the mouse idle for a couple of minutes. You will hear a sound and Adee will turn into Oliver, who will spin around wildly if you move the mouse. He will turn back into Adee during the level, but will soon turn back into Oliver when the stage is finished. There is also a scoop of ice cream featuring Oliver. He's very rare, however.
Meepit Juice Break
Click the uppermost Green Meepit's eye in the main screen to see Oliver with a Green Meepit on his head.
Meerca Chase II
On the front screen of Meerca Chase II, click the Meerca's right eye. He will turn into Oliver holding two Fish Neggs for a few seconds.
Petpetsitter
Clicking on a spot on the sleeping Feepit's head will reveal Oliver!
The Return of the Return of Dr. Sloth
On the main screen, Ollie appears strapped to rockets! Simply click the teeny white speck in the eye of Dr. Sloth in the background image. (The green version of Sloth, not the black one.) He is also something you can shoot for 500 points!
Ruins Rampage
To see Oliver transform from a Qasalan mummy into his orange-shirted self, on the main screen, click the left scarab, the right scarab, Horace's eye, and then Zina's eye.
Scamander Swarm
In the top left corner, clicking the Scamander's eye (who is walking down the building) will reveal Oliver!
Smug Bug Smite
Click on View Instructions, then on the Mozito's right eye (i.e., his right eye, so the leftmost eye in the image). Ollie and another as-yet-unidentified staff member will appear!
Snowball Fight
He appears in two places here. First, he's a character in the game that you can hit for up to 50 points for a head shot! Second, on the start screen, looking at the top of the ski slope, you'll see something orange. Click it!
Snowmuncher
Click Dieter's right eye on the main screen to have Oliver standing on top of an O appear in the bottom left corner.
Sutek's Tomb
On the instructions page, clicking the teeny weeny door on the pyramid to the right will make Oliver pop up. Occasionally during gameplay, good ol' Ollie will appear amongst the gems. Using him will result in the whole board being cleared.
Trouble At The National Neopian
A game just wouldn't be a game without an obviously rich Oliver poking his head in the door. Sometimes (extremely rarely), Oliver will appear as a customer, with bags of gold all around. This'll give you 25 points!
Tyrannian Mini Golf
At the screen where you select who you want to play as, click the Lupe's eye to choose Oliver as the player. The little picture of your character in the bottom left corner will be Oliver, and it is rumoured that he is a combination of the other three characters' skills.
Defunct Games
These games are either in the Game Graveyard or not accessible anymore at all.
Black Pawkeet and Brucey B Slots
In the original version of these, Oliver's head, like Adam's and Donna's, used to roll by on the reels. It didn't do anything, but it was a nice way to break the monotony. Both games have since been re-released without the staff members' heads, though.
Destruct-O-Match II
Clicking on the bottom of the second bone in the title on the front screen will play a sound and make Oliver pop up!
Parkfacts (from Petpet Park)
Ollie popped up in new olive garb; clicking on the left eye of the Drym on the title screen reveals him. It's uncertain whether he had a hand in creating the game or if this was just a tribute to him.
Yooyuball (Flash version)
At the end screen where you submit your score, click the Techo's right eye. A fanfare of music will play and Oliver will pop up in a toga!
Weepit Was Here
It would seem that Ollie has started a trend of sorts amongst the game programmers as another staffer has started slipping Easter eggs into their games as well! Weepit slips not-so-subtle clues into the games they work on in the form of sheets of paper with the words "Weepit was here" written on them. Unlike most of Ollie's, there isn't really anything you can press to find these Easter eggs, they just appear randomly whilst playing the following games:
Crisis Courier
In an exception to the "randomness" of the other appearances, you can trigger this Easter egg by clicking on the bottom leftmost window of the building in the background at the menu screen to enter a "secret" level.
Imperial Exam
During random plays, you will see a sheet of paper with "Weepit was here" stuck to the sign above the doorway behind the Kacheek and the Grarrl.
The Usul Suspects
At the start of a game, you may spot a "Weepit was here" sign stuck across the face of the Chia slide on the left of the screen. (Thanks to Nica for finding and confirming this appearance!)
Volcano Run II
During the game, you will encounter rocks with "Weepit was here" carved into them. That is, if you can read them without crashing into the walls of the volcano.
Weepit Was Here
These games previously featured the mark of Weepit, but the Easter eggs were removed in November 2013 for unknown reasons.
Faerie Cloud Racers
Sometimes at the beginning of the round, you could see the sheet of paper caught on the cloud at the bottom of the screen, though it would blow away as the round started.
Flycatcher
"Weepit was here" text would appear at the bottom of the lake at the start of a level before fading out.
Meepit vs. Feepit
At the beginning of a new round you could have seen a wooden sign inscribed with the words "Weepit was here" at the bottom of the screen that would then fall down and disappear. (Thanks to JN Golfer for letting us know about this one.)
Tug 'O' War
In a previous version of the game, fireworks would play if you defeated all opponents. There was a 5% chance that the smoke from the fireworks would spell out the words "Weepit was here".
